Retargeting vs Remarketing: Plan a Useful Follow-Up Strategy
Understand how retargeting and remarketing overlap, then plan paid ads and email follow-up around customer intent and measurable outcomes.

Retargeting and remarketing are often used interchangeably. Some teams use retargeting for paid advertising to previous visitors and remarketing for email or broader customer follow-up. Agree on your own definitions before comparing results. The label matters less than the audience, message, and action you are trying to encourage.
Start with the unfinished customer decision
An ecommerce shopper might need delivery information, a clearer product comparison, or reassurance about returns. A business buyer might need implementation details or an answer to a procurement question. Repeating the same promotional message does not address every reason someone left.
Group audiences around meaningful actions rather than treating all visitors alike. Separate new prospects, cart visitors, customers, and qualified business leads where your tools and permissions allow it. Define exclusions so people do not keep receiving an offer they already accepted.
Give ads and email different jobs
Paid follow-up can bring a previous visitor back to a relevant page. Email can provide a more detailed explanation when you have an appropriate basis to contact the person. Coordinate the timing and offer so the channels do not contradict each other.
For a cart sequence, check product availability, promotion terms, and whether the person has already purchased. For B2B follow-up, align the message with the sales conversation. An open opportunity should not be treated like an anonymous first-time visitor.
Fix the destination before increasing spend
Review the page the customer returns to. Make shipping costs, product details, forms, and the next step easy to understand. Follow-up campaigns cannot compensate for a broken checkout or an offer that does not fit the audience.
Start with conversion rate optimization if visitors consistently stop at the same point. Then use retargeting campaign management to connect a clear audience to a relevant message and destination.
Measure the outcome without counting it twice
Compare platform reporting with your order or CRM records. Watch for campaigns claiming credit for the same conversion, especially when someone sees an ad and later clicks an email. Use a consistent attribution view for budget decisions and label platform-specific numbers clearly.
Where practical, test a holdout or another controlled comparison to understand whether follow-up creates additional sales. Monitor qualified leads, profit after marketing costs, and customer experience alongside conversion volume. A campaign that discounts purchases that would have happened anyway may look stronger in the ad platform than it is for the business.
