Choosing an Affiliate Network: Impact, CJ, Awin and Rakuten
Compare affiliate networks by publisher fit, tracking, operating costs, and support. ShareASale has closed and its programs moved to Awin.
Choosing an affiliate network is an operating decision as much as a marketing decision. The right fit depends on the publishers you want to recruit, your ecommerce setup, target markets, and the people who will manage the program.
Impact, CJ, Awin, and Rakuten Advertising belong on a practical evaluation list. A network's size or a recognizable logo does not tell you whether the partners you need are active in your category or interested in your offer.
ShareASale is no longer a separate option
ShareASale closed on October 6, 2025, following the upgrade to Awin. Treat older comparisons that list it as a separate live platform as historical. If you inherited a ShareASale program, verify the current Awin account and implementation rather than following an old setup tutorial.
Ask every network the same questions
Build a shortlist of publishers you would actually want to work with. Ask each platform how those partners participate, which markets they serve, and what a realistic recruitment process involves. A directory listing is not a commitment to promote your brand.
Request written details on tracking integration, reporting, commission rules, payment processes, support, and contract terms. Use the same scenario across demonstrations so you can compare the work your team will need to do.
Compare total operating cost
Include platform charges, commissions, promotional placements, internal labor, and agency management. Check minimum commitments and any migration or implementation work in the proposal. Pricing and services vary by agreement, so use current quotes instead of an old comparison table.
Also consider the cost of managing another platform. Running several networks can introduce duplicate attribution, inconsistent offers, and more reporting work. Expand only when a clear partner opportunity justifies the added complexity.
Test the workflow before committing
Walk through a test order, cancellation, return, and commission adjustment with the implementation team. Confirm how results reconcile with your ecommerce records. Review product feeds, deep links, and the information publishers need to build accurate promotions.
Then write a launch plan with recruitment ownership, partner approval criteria, creative delivery, and a regular review process. Tracking infrastructure is necessary, but active partner relationships determine what the program becomes.
Decide with evidence from your own program
Score each option against the same requirements and document the tradeoffs. Choose the network that supports your priority publishers and a manageable operating process, rather than declaring a universal winner.
