Why Keyword Research is a Big Part of Affiliate Marketing Success

Keyword research is about finding the right keywords that will lead to search results and therefore traffic to your sites or blogs. When you have good keyword research on a particular niche, you are moving in the right direction. Knowing what people are searching for relating to a product or merchant is the first step in building a site, blog or doing PPC effectively. For example you are building a site about insurance. With keyword research you know all the phrases people are typing into Google, Yahoo and MSN and generally how many times a month a particualr phrase is searched for. You should build the content for your site around the most popular search phreases related to the product or service you are promoting. It is also a good idea to craft your meta-tags and content on your homepage around the most popular search phrases. Write your content in such a way that you are natually talking about the product or service, not that you are just putting the same phrases over and over. Then you can start building out your sub-pages or interior site pages based on the additional phrases that your keyword research yields for you. Another thing you can do is to look for common misspelled words and phrases that you can drop onto your pages so when someone tpyes incorrectly when searching for something, your page will rank because it mentions the misspelling on the page. This is a commonly used method that some of the biggest super-affiliates use to get free traffic. Another thing thorough keyword research will do for you is that it will allow you to create pages or posts on more obscure topics and phrases that other affiliates or the merchant themselves hasn’t thought of or found through their own keyword research. Regarding PPC Marketing…your keyword research will yield lots of phrases that you may think will produce traffic but will they produce conversions and sales? Each different group of keywords needs to be tested to see if any conversions come in. If you test out 100 different phrase types and 50 have ROI and 50 do not, you keep and expand the ones that do and get rid of the ones that do not (or pause the campaign to try again at a later date). Ad group testing should be done at a very low spend to see if any conversions do come in. In more competitive niches, it can be next to impossible to make money as an affiliate with PPC, but thorough keyword research can elucidate some angles that you can exploit. Organically speaking, the more pages you build onto your site or blog targeting the popular and less popular phrases can lead to a good flow of organic or free traffic and therefore sales.
