There are actually many great performing affiliate program niches out there you can participate in. If you have an existing site, you can match up your site with a relavant affiliate program or 2 and strategically plug in banners and links to get people clicking through. In Commission Junction and other networks, for example, they post a performance average of each merchant called the EPC. EPC stands for affiliate earnings per hundred clicks. So for example if you are sending traffic to a merchants site, for every hundred clicks you send you should make a certian amount of commission, such as $20-50 depending on the conversion rate of your traffic and the merchant you’re sending the traffic to. Affiliate programs with higher EPCs will naturally attract more affiliates to those merchants because affiliates are looking at that EPC average when deciding who to promote first in a niche or by keyword, so it’s very important to maintain a good EPC average from a merchant perspective. But the EPC isn’t slways a true indication of how well a program performs due to the fact that there are better converting affiliates and less well converting affiliates sending traffic to the merchants, which skews the EPC quite a bit, depending how much “EPC management” is done to keep it higher. Managing the EPC number on the part of the affiliate manager should be a constant focus on improving the EPC over time and gaining more niche affiliates. So once you have found a good EPC merchant in your niche you can add their banners and links to your site, make posts or pages, then share the posts on your Facebook fan page and Twitter account. Rinse and repeat a thousand times and you have a nice amount of pages and content on your site and you can expect to be generating organic traffic from Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Using plugins to display your fan page widget and email newsletter sign-ups are a must to capitalizing on the traffic. You can even launch a forum or get people involved in your community to maximize the traffic. At the end of the day, you want to be generating as much traffic to you site as possible as well as capitalizing on the traffic through various strategies.

So when yo are looking at affiliate programs to promote there are several very common affiliate niches that have been good performers over the years. These include:
- Gift affiliate programs
- Dating offers and affiliate programs
- Surveys offers and affiliate programs
- Consumer electronics affiliate programs
- Jewelry affiliate programs
- Insurance lead offers
- Financial lead offers
- Parenting/babies offers and affiliate programs
- Sports-related affiliate programs
- Health-related affiliate programs
- Car/auto affiliate programs
- Flower affiliate programs
- Costume Affiliate Programs

These are but a few niches that have historically done well for affiliates, but all types of ecommerce sites have affiliate programs matching virtually any niche of website. More recently there has been an absolute explosion in affiliate programs and affiliate networks coming online. Affiliates have so many choices it’s really hard to figure out where to start. I usually suggest to brand-new affiliates that they join Commission Junction, Linkshare, Shareasale, Buy.at, and Google Network, then start applying to programs in your niche. Apply to hundreds of them and see who approves you. Some merchants maybe pickier than others about letting you into the program, but you can usually contact the affiliate manager to get them to let you into the program. But don’t let a few declined applications slow you down.

Once you have found an affiliate program you think you can do well with, you should contact the affiliate manager to obtain whatever intelligence you can from them about angles you should be trying and what has worked for affiliates historically. Be prepared to not get too far with some programs, as they might not have very advanced affiliate management and therefore can’t tell you the most effective ways to promote the program. Some can give you keyword files, unique content,  and coupon codes to increase conversions and help you build pages faster. You will find out fairly quickly after joining some affiliate programs, who has the support and who doesn’t. Don’t reply on the support of affiliate managers, just make it happen yourself, all you really need are their banners and links to get them integrated into your website. Join the website newsletters of the companies you are promoting and that will give you news and information to promote on your website. Also, setting up Google Alerts is a great way to stay on top of a niche or industry so you always have posting ideas.

Another strategy is building out niche websites focused on different products or services. Some affiliates will build large coupon or discount portals to capitalize on all the searching going on for coupon codes for various merchants. Building a niche site should focus around content and plenty of it. You can use WordPress to power your content management system and add functional plug-ins to the site. Trying social networking into your websites and your promotional strategy is a must.

So you want to launch a new website and generate affiliate commissions, but are unsure about your strategy. Well, building websites or blogs about certain topics, subjects, or “niches’ is a great way to proceed for a number of reasons. People love websites that focus on a certain subject they are interested in, so make sure to build your niche website or blog with laser-focus and with a purpose to ensure you will get traffic, repeat visitors, and build a following over time. As you build out your site, your traffic and following will increase, therefore you can generate revenue with your site by doing things like: advertising affiliate banners, adding Google Adsense, building an email list, gaining Twitter followers, and adding Facebook fans/likes. All of this can be accomplished with very little cost. Niche website/blog building is an integral part of publishing content on the web, generating traffic, and therefore producing affiliate sales. Content is king and the more content you are able to allow the search engines to “spider”, catalog, and then rank, the more possible traffic you can generate to your sites. Here are some niche website, SEO, Social Networking, and linking concepts to get you moving in the right direction:

Site Building Tools – I highly recommend WordPress to build sites with (my company’s free site builder with free hosting uses WordPress). There are many sites builders you can use to get a presence up on the web. Make sure to set it up properly with good titles and categories. If using WordPress, utilize tagging as well which multiplies the actually amount of spiderable pages on your site. Blogger.com is also a good free platform to use to create a site, add affiliate banners, and start posting fresh content.

Site Organizational Strategy – When you go to launch niche sites, to promote affiliate merchants, make sure to stay organized in a spreadsheet with info like: Merchant promoted, platform used to build it, login info (passwords), and posting frequency, i.e. (Date.com, WordPress, Evan@exper.com (jimihen5478321), twice daily). This will help you stay organized and will allow you follow a pre-established plan of action. Strategize on posting frequency to maximize your efforts.

Daily content posting – Posting content daily (i.e. articles, bog posts, essays, merchant reviews, product reviews) is a great way to ensure that the search engines will be coming back to your site frequently to check for new content to catalog. Over time, the more frequently you post, the more pages you will have in the search engine’s repository or cache. The more pages you have in the cache, the more possible times your site’s pages can come up in the search results for various search terms, i.e. “Purchase flowers in Las Vegas”. Daily content posting is the best way to increase the number of pages on your site and therefore increase the amount of possible traffic you can generate with that particular site. Post original content is always the best couse of action because the search engines love original content. Try to stay timely with your posts by setting up Google Alerts on your core keyword phrase so you are notified as soon as something new about that subject happens, then you can go make a post on your site about it which can increase your chances to get traffic to that page.

Use the Best Plug-ins to Enhance Your SEO – One of the advantages to using WordPress to build your sites is all the amazing plug-ins you can add to your site to increase functionality and “stickiness”. Here are some links to the top plug-ins available:

Social Bookmark Your Articles – Social bookmarking is a great way to generate traffic, inbound links, and better rankings for your site’s content. You have to join the sites first and create a profile. This will allow you to bookmark,or submit, any articles you wish. You can submit your own articles to these sites and other people may bookmark them if they find them interesting which helps their exposure. You should bookmark or Digg other peoples content and articles too, it just may encourage them to do your too. Top Social Bookmarking Sites: http://www.ebizmba.com/articles/social-bookmarking-websites. I recommend the Addthis.com Google Chome extension to allow you to submit your new pages and posts easier to the top social bookmarking sites.

Social Networking – Create a Twitter account and Facebook Fan Page for each site you wish to build up. Example, you are running a site advertising flower affiliate merchants, so you would create an identity “FlowerGuru” for instance on Twitter and a FlowerGuru Fan Page on FB. This will allow you to advertise these groups on your sites and generate followers and fans. Then, these followers and friends can be messaged and communicated with to generate traffic back to your sites. Social networking is very powerful and shouldn’t be used obnoxiously. Always remain professional and post content you think your followers and fans would benefit from, i.e. helpful tips, informative articles from trusted sources, interactive polls, and affiliate promotions. Try to avoid being annoying because or you will lose followers. You should also have a main personal identity that you can maintain in order to network professionally on Facebook and LinkedIn.

Coupon Promoting – Coupon sites are all the rage because people are increasingly looking for coupons to save money with online merchants. Many affiliate merchants provide coupon codes to affiliate to help them promote. Some merchants provide coupon feeds that you can grab and publish on your site on a page or per merchant. You need some skills or tools to accomplish this. Posting unique merchant descriptions and merchant reviews will allow your site to rank well because it has unique content and isn’t just posting coupon codes. Unique content is absolutely essentially to good rankings, especially for a coupon site when there is so much competition.

Communities and Forums – Launching your own social community is great way to build something real and substantial that will grow over time. Social communities are great for repeat traffic and building a large member base. Like sites, the larger it builds the more traffic it can generate. Ning.com is a tremendous tool for niche community building, but has a small monthly fee. Vbulletin is great for online forums. Forums and social networks are just more ways to create ad space and get traffic. The nice thing is they are built up content-wise by the users, which can add a significant amount of content depending on how active your community is.

Link Building Strategies – Acquiring inbound inks to your sites is essential to building better search engine rankings over time. There are many different ways you can get links to your site, such as:
- Blog Roll Links – When a fellow blogger links to your blog sitewide, you can reciprocate with a link. Goes on every page so it can be powerful.
- Blog Commenting – Posting comments on blogs related to yours (Google Blog Search can be used to find related blogs to comment on). Make good comments or they won’t be approved.
- Forum Posting with Signature Link – Join multiple forums, set-up signature links, start posting good comments and interacting.
- Online Press Releases – great for building links from quality news sites. I recommend eReleases.com for maximum distribution and effectiveness.

Site Stickiness – Site stickiness is a tremendous concept to grasp and implement. Making your site more sticky will allow you to capture more from your site’s traffic. Some essential sticky features are: newsletter signup, bookmark this site, social network sharing buttons like follow on Twitter and FaceBook Fanpage, and RSS Feed. Basically anything that will help you capture more of your visitors information. Another great way to engage visitors is to run sweepstakes or contests through tools like WildFireApp and Woobox. This is a very effective way of engaging your visitors and capturing them into your web so you can remarket to them later on.

RSS Feed Submissions – Every blog has by nature RSS feeds included. RSS feeds allow you to syndicate your content all over the web and into people’s feed readers. Your RSS feeds need to be manually submitted to get the best effect. Definitely check out Robin Good’s site for more excellent info on RSS and the top 200 RSS directories to submit to: www.masternewmedia.org. Once you have submitted your RSS feed once to each RSS directory you are done.

Article Ideas – Coming up with article and blog post ideas can be challenging at times. Look at other related sites and see what they are posting in their blogs and article sections. Here are some examples of article titles:
- “Top 10 ways to Find a Date Online”
- “Best Ways to Lose Weight in the New Year”
- “What are the Top Phone Service Providers for Home Phone Service”
-  ”How to start a garden in your backyard”

Also how to’s, breaking news, and new product launches are good topics to write about.

Brand Your Affiliate Sites – Creating a brand with your affiliate site or blog is a good idea because people will remember your site and revisit them frequently. Give people a reason to bookmark your site or join your newsletter. Treat them well and grow them huge over time! Personal branding is all the rage, so make sure to create your memorable brand and then represent it to the fullest online. Anything can work with the right amount of push and effort behind it.

Picking the right affiliate marketing niches to work on is so important to maximizing your online marketing effectiveness. Different times of year are better for promoting certain types of products and services, and most Advertisers and “offers”  have their seasonality, which means they have a higher demand and click-to-sale ratio during certain times of year. That’s why its important to maintain focused websites or blogs in a variety of niches so you are always in season with one site or another. Since we are still in Q1 of 2012, New Years resolution type products and services are still converting really well. Gifts for Valentine’s Day are doing well right now, but will soon be over so here are some other good Q1 and Q2 affiliate niches you can focus on to maximize the effectiveness and traffic of you websites and blogs:

1. Dating – Online dating is always hot it seems and has been for years. Dating offers convert particularly well in the beginning of the year because people are looking for love after the holidays and New Year. There are so many online dating affiliate programs to choose from it can be difficult to decide which to promote. Make sure which ever ones you go with has an easy conversion process and a nice high payout per lead or sale. Also, if you have traffic you can play one Advertiser against another to get the highest commission rates. All dating Advertisers are hungry for new quality customer acquisitions due to the extremely competitive nature of the industry, so you can promise this and that and get a great commission rate right away, otherwise you can tell them you will go to their competitor for that payout. Dating review sites work well and offer the consumer the choice of what they are most intrigued by. Reviewing or providing info on several dating websites gives you more of a chance to make a commission depending on which website the visitor joins. If you are collecting email address on your website you can send them offers from the various affiliate advertisers and maximize the chances for a conversion.

2. Weight Loss and Dieting – Weight loss and dieting is another huge niche that always seems to be popular and heavily searched for, especially in the beginning of the year because people want to slim down as one of their New Year resolutions. Another relatively new breed of diet offers is the “diet meal delivery service” like Nutri-system. Diet meal delivery programs make it easy and convenient for consumers to eat healthy and lose weight, so they are very popular and gaining in popularity. Targeting locations like “New York diet meal delivery” is an effective way to craft content that will rank organically for location-based searches. Now go out and built a hundred unique city/state pages like that and you will be getting some good traffic. Make sure to feature the banner ads prominently on the page so they get clicked on. You can even try the food yourself so you can more accurately provide information and reviews to your visitors and audience. Sometime the company will give you free samples if you have a decent enough website or blog.

3. Smoking Cessation – Quitting smoking will always be a popular niche because there are millions of Americans (and in other countries) that are wanting to stop smoking. Electronic cigarettes have become very popular in the last couple of years and have proven to be a good performing affiliate niche. Creating an electronic cigarette review site can be effective because it gives the consumer a choice of companies and products. Targeted search, SEO, and Facebook advertising can be effective with these types of products is promoted well with the right commission on the back-end. 4. Phone Service – another popular thing to do in the New Year is cutting expenses and saving money on your household budget. Doing something like changing your home or virtual office phone service from over-priced national carriers to VOIP-based services can dramatically cut your expenses. Phone service affiliate programs typically have a good conversion rate and high payout, so they can be promoted through both free and paid online advertising channels. The more sales you produce, the higher of a commission you can get from the Advertiser because it is a competitive industry and life-time customer value is usually good. Look for other budget cutting services that can be promoted or built a site for. People love saving money and slashing their expenses so this will always be a very popular niche you can craft content for.

5. Trend Watching – another great way to find new, profitable affiliate niches is to watch trends. If you see a product or service all the children in the neighborhood are into, it’s probably a good niche and you should try to find an affiliate Advertiser to partner with. Likewise, anything in the popular culture that seems hot or new and exciting, you can find an Advertiser that sells it and put up a blog review site for it. Since blogs and basic sites basically cost nothing to construct, there is no reason you can’t have many sites launched in various niches with basic original content on them. Google Trends is a great way to monitor and find hot, new trends you can get involved in. If you can find an Advertiser on the major affiliate networks like CJ, Linkshare, Shareasale, and Google Network, you can contact sites and suggest they launch an affiliate program because you are interested in promoting in that niche. Once you have the site going and affiliate ads on it you can set-up Google Alerts on particular keyword phrases to notify you when something hits the web about that niche so you can go write a post on your site immediately. This is a great way to  get free traffic because you will be one of the first with a post about it on the web, so when people go searching for it your page can come up in the organic search results.

These are some well performing affiliate niches that work great in the first part of the year. There are many more of course, but I just wanted to give a few to spark your interest. I definitely think trend spotting is a good method for finding affiliate niches before others that you can put a site or blog up for that niche with 5-10 original articles that can get ranking in the free traffic. But you should be able to update your sites/blogs with fresh content on a weekly basis at least to maintain good rankings (daily is best).
